Akashwani Urdu

Akashwani Urdu service is a 24-hour programme but it does not have a single Urdu employee while 12 vacancies are lying vacant according to reliable sources. Notwithstanding a lot of complaints, no progress has been made so far to fill up these vacancies. Voices have been raised even in Parliament in this regard. It may be noted that the Aakashwani Urdu Service is a round-the-clock service and a historic one at that, because some great personalities of Urdu literature, like Majaz, Krishn Chandra, Mouj Rampuri, Mahmood Hashmi and Mujib Siddiqi etc. have served here.

According to reliable sources, Hindi-speaking people are now appointed in the Urdu service, who, leave alone writing and reading Urdu, are not even capable of speaking correct Urdu. It is also said that those appointed in the name of Urdu are being used for the Hindi service. Sources say that according to Aakashwani’s rules no religion should be criticised in any of its programmes but most of the time this platform is used to criticise Islamic issues like veil, head scarf etc.

In tamil book of poems on the Gujarat carnage released

The hideous three-pronged shadows of the gleaming, bloodstained trishuls, have buried the last ray of light that was left in Gujarat. For a land that has been hounded by every natural calamity from the devastating plague to massive earthquakes, there is no longer the serenity of the Sabarmati to return to. Blood has etched the scarred landscape. Hatred and malice have been systematically force-fed, innocence has been indoctrinated into doing the worst possible crimes under the garbs of religious duty. And Modi’s second term symbolizes the unholy trinity that has come to characterize Hindutva: Fascism, Fundamentalism, Violence.

So, while Praveen Togadia, aims to leap to the south to distribute trishuls, Muslims in Tamil Nadu are busy penning their poems in memory of the Gujarat genocide. Recently, on 27th December 2003, Thottakkal (‘Bullets’ edited by Aloor Shanavas) containing 49 Tamil poems on the state-sponsored genocide in Gujarat was released at the Sir P.T.Thiyagarayar Hall at T.Nagar in Chennai. In this anthology there are the poems of anger, the poems of war, but somehow what predominates are the poems of suffering and sorrow. Poetry is foremost catharsis: here, almost every other poem speaks of pregnant womens’ wombs being seared apart, of the children roasted, of the fire which still continues to scorch. Reading through the volume, one is left wondering as to what happened to the concept of ‘hyper masculinity’ of the Muslim male that the Orange Order has so fancifully depicted. In sharp contrast, the most poignant and tear-jerking poems in the collection have been written by men.

Suddenly the whole ‘conqueror’ theory of the Sangh--which projects Muslims as being the evil conquerors--falls flat, nose down and squashed. Conquerors write history, not poetry. Poetry is the legacy of the oppressed, the fuel of revolutions. Beginning with Black poetry of the African Americans to the Marathi Dalit poetry, verses have been used as weapons of war. So, today when we see a minority community that has been bamboozled into writing poems to come to terms with trauma, it shows the ugliest face of the oft-quoted lie: Indian democracy. In a stark manner, the irony becomes palpable, it is not the aggressor who writes of the bullets, but it is the targeted.

Thottakkal is the poetic chronicle of one of the most brutal genocides that has taken place the world over. Every page carries with it the photographic impressions that capture the open-mouthed horror of the state-sponsored genocide. There is the post-modernist breaking down of the system, there are no page numbers in the volume, no numbers for the poems: showcasing the fact that with emotions there cannot be preferences or partialities. No matter how much the anthology presents a victimology, there is no masking the fact that within every tear lies the power to retaliate.

The drama and the tension stepped out of the pages of the book, and they came to dominate the book launch function. The book was released by Muthumari, a Dalit woman of the Kizha Urappannur village in the Madurai District, who had a mixture of human excrement and water poured on her head for daring to spurn the advances of an oppressor caste man. The first copy of Thottakkal was received by Hasnar of Coimbatore city, who lost his son during the communal riots that shook the city in the year 1997. By combining the worst instances of casteist and communalist atrocities in Tamil Nadu, and by bringing forth its victims to play such an important part in the function, the publishers of this book have set a remarkable trend.

Other notable and distinguished invitees were: anti-caste secular activist and intellectual Prof. A. Marx, President of the Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam Prof. M. H. Zawahirullah, General Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee S. Peter Alphonse, the poet Abdul Rehman, Prof. Periyardasan and Sun TV anchor and talk-show host Thiru. Veerapandian. The intellectuals participating in the meet stressed on the need to take this genocide to various forums: ranging from the appointment of international truth/inquiry commissions to putting the Modi government on trail in the international court of justice. It presented a picture of shared grief, with the boundaries of ‘your’ and ‘mine’ disappearing. It was about collectivist sorrow and collectivist dissent. Qutubuddin and Zaheera, Best Bakery and refugee camps were words that were repeated over and over, every new repetition trying to bring in catharsis and consolation.

For a faraway and distant Tamil Nadu to respond to this confounded atrocity, shows the state of the Muslims in the country. And what is fostering their unity? Their coming-together has not been any internal force, nothing other than the campaigns of hatred unleashed by the Sangh Parivar. But no matter how much the Sangh forces the ghettoisation of the Muslims, their isolation shall never be permanent. Appreciably, some of the strongest voices that speak out against the Gujarat genocide have been from the (mainstream) intelligentsia, from secular artists who have been spontaneous in their solidarity. Take the brilliant example of the poem The Murder of the Gods by Eelam Tamil poet Kasi Anandan (now in exile in Tamil Nadu):

The most significant lesson learnt is that it is essential to expose. It was seen in the bright and daring eyes of Muthumari, in the firm resolve of Hasnar, and in the honest voices of the poets. What is needed are such efforts all over the nation, from people of every language.

In these poems there is an immediate tone of urgency in the voices, it appears as though Gujarat burned just yesterday. And it is not just a torrent of tears, it is also a torrent of bullets. It does not stop with being a many-voiced dirge about the death and destruction, it also contains the seeds to settle the scores.

India should take note of US report on religious freedom: IAMC

The Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC) has called on the Government of India as well as various state governments to take note of the 2011 Annual Report of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) that has placed India on a "Watch List" for the third year in succession.

"It is indeed unfortunate that India, with its long history of tolerance and multiculturalism, has now found a place in the list of countries where religious freedom is at risk", said Mr. Shaheen Khateeb, President of IAMC. "However IAMC firmly believes that the recommendations of USCIRF are based on factual information. They represent legitimate concerns about the treatment of religious minorities in India, and should not be seen as an exercise in India-bashing", added Mr. Khateeb.

IAMC wishes to reiterate that it is an organization of patriots, committed to secularism, pluralism and justice for all citizens regardless of their religion, caste or ethnic affiliations. IAMC is also committed to projecting an accurate picture of India internationally, he said.

It was in pursuance of its patriotic duties that IAMC deemed it fit to accept USCIRF's invitation to present a briefing on the status of religious minorities in India. IAMC accepted this recognition as a professional organization, and briefed the USCIRF commissioners and staff with information that would be helpful in it assessment of religious freedom in India, Mr. Khateeb informed.

IAMC specifically welcomed the USCIRF report's recommendation about radical sectarian organizations in India. The report says:

"The activities of these groups, especially those with an extremist agenda or history of using violence against minorities, often negatively impact the status of religious freedom in the country. Many of these organizations exist under the banner of the Sangh Parivar, a 'family' of over 30 organizations that includes the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Bajrang Dal, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), and the BJP. Sangh Parivar entities aggressively press for governmental policies to promote a Hindu nationalist agenda, and adhere in varying degrees to an ideology of Hindutva, which holds non-Hindus as foreign to India".

IAMC resolved to continue its tireless efforts against violations of religious freedom as well as social injustices by actively engaging with civil society in India. “IAMC is concerned about the jingoistic slant of some organizations that are preoccupied with whitewashing India's human rights record, rather than working to improve it. IAMC believes that India can and should reclaim its pluralist and tolerant ethos by holding accountable the perpetrators of communal violence, fake encounters and miscarriages of justice, without regard to their political or social standing,” Mr. Khateeb said.

IAMC also welcomed the balanced position taken by the USCIRF report wherein several constructive steps taken by the Congress led central government to uplift minorities are cited. However, the report accurately highlights the culture of impunity in some states, exemplified by the fact that overwhelming evidence of premeditated killings in the Gujarat riots as well as the 1984 anti-Sikh riots have yet to result in the conviction of the masterminds behind these pogroms. Among several other recommendations, the report has specifically called for cases against Mr. Narendra Modi to be allowed to proceed in accordance with the law.

The eminent group of India American Muslims, however, regretted that the plight of Muslims languishing in jail for the terror plots concocted by extremist Hindutva organizations, as confessed by Swami Aseemananda, was given insufficient coverage in the USCIRF report. The issue merits a full scale investigation as it highlights the demonstrable scale of anti-minority prejudice in the law enforcement agencies that inflicted unspeakable torture on innocent citizens they were charged to protect. Acquittal of the Muslim youth that have been unjustly charged with the terror blasts they had nothing to do with, would be an important step towards healing the wounds of communal violence.

But the group noted with regret attempts by some organizations to undermine the legitimacy of the USCIRF's report and its recommendations, by referring to instances of religious intolerance in the United States. While religious intolerance is admittedly a challenge for several countries around the world, criticism of India's human rights record should be addressed by working to change the ground realities, rather than through attempts to obfuscate the issues.

Any part of the proposed project that will be done in the applicant's own country will not be funded under the ASIA Fellows Awards. The proposed grant period must be between 6-9 months. While an applicant from South or Southeast Asia may propose a research project in a country within his/her own region, preference is given to applicants who propose to conduct research in a region of Asia other than their own (e.g., an award to an Indian scholar or professional for research in China). Fellows are strongly encouraged to undertake some language training in their host country as part of facilitating their research. They are also provided the opportunities to present guest lectures, or to conduct seminars and workshops at the invitation of the host institutions. After completion of their fellowship, fellows can apply for post-fellowship awards of three months to further their research in a country within Asia , or for short-term travel awards to make presentations at overseas conferences and meetings. All fellows are required to attend the Orientation Program in July 2007, and the ASIA Fellows' Annual Conference in July 2009 at which they present their research results to fellow awardees and to scholars from the country in which the conference is held. They are also required to start the award by the end of December 2007. At the end of the fellowship, fellows must submit to the ASF office in Bangkok evidence of the results of their research project in the form of publications, photos of artistic works, audio/ video productions, etc.

IRF EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP 2011-12
